The Browser War
For most of my browsing, I actually prefer Netscape 4.73. Here's why:
 | It's easy to turn Java and JavaScript on and off as needed |
 | I can force web pages to display colors and fonts that I've selected instead of
using the site's colors. |
Why Internet Explorer wins the war
That said, for online games and lottery sites, I would recommend using Microsoft
Internet Explorer 5, for the following reasons:
 | It's easy to jump into full-screen mode with one key press (F11) |
 | It's easy to change the size of the font from a menu (View->Text Size) |
 | On my Windows 98 Second Edition and Windows 95-B machines, Java seems more stable under
MSIE than Netscape. Of course, not all game sites use Java, but most of them do. |
 | For some pages that display many graphics, Netscape 4.7 seems to eat up system memory
and doesn't give it back when you close the program. The only solution at that point is to
re-start the computer. |
Some MSIE-specific tips
 | Lottery sites can be pretty graphics-intensive, which can get kind of slow if you have
anything less than a permanent internet connection (also known as a modem and a phone
line). So be patient while the graphics load so they can be stored in your cache. If
an image doesn't load properly, right-click on it and select show picture from
the pop-up menu. |
 | Once you click the submit button (or whatever the game calls it) to enter your
numbers, what a while for a response, especially during internet "prime-time"
(between 8PM and Midnight here on the East Coast - U.S.A.). |
 | Want even more space when you are in full-screen mode? Right-click on the button bar at
the top, and select Auto-Hide from the pop-up menu. |
